ArcGIS in plain words
What people mean when a job posting says ArcGIS.
ArcGIS is a family of programs from Esri. When someone says they know ArcGIS, ask which part. The two you will hear most are ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
ArcGIS Pro is the desktop program. You open a map, add layers, and look at the table behind each layer. A layer might be service lines, parcels, or streets. You can select features, edit them, and run simple questions. Show me the plastic services. Show me everything inside this neighborhood.
ArcGIS Online is in the browser. People use it to share a map with someone who does not have Pro. A coordinator can look at a job without installing the desktop software. Editing rights are usually tighter there. The desktop file is still the one a lot of analysts work in.
Older offices still mention ArcMap. That is the previous desktop program. Many places have moved to Pro. If you are learning now, learn Pro.
I took Esri ArcGIS Pro training from 2023 through 2026. The useful part was not every tool in the menu. It was the basic loop. Open the layer. Read the attributes. Check them against the source. Then edit, or do not edit.
You do not need to know every extension. For utility work, know how to turn layers on and off, how to open the attribute table, how to search, and how to tell an edit from a view. The rest can wait until a task needs it.
ArcGIS is the tool. It does not decide if a fact is true. The field packet or the as-built still has to back up the change.
