What an as-built is

April 18, 2025

The drawing that has to agree with the map before you post.

An as-built is a record of what got built. Not what the plan hoped would get built.

A design drawing is made before the crew goes out. In the field, things change. The crew may hit a conflict, move a fitting, or retire an old pipe and leave it in the ground. The as-built is the update that says what they did.

On gas service work, the as-built often comes back in a field packet. The packet is the set of papers or files for that job. The as-built is the part that shows the pipe. On the Atmos jobs I checked, many of those as-builts were collected in LocusView. LocusView is a field tool. The crew or the inspector records the work on a device. That file comes to the office with the packet.

The GIS does not update itself from that file in every shop. A person still compares. Does the material on the as-built match the feature. Does the as-built say the old pipe was abandoned in place. Is the drawing actually in the packet.

If the answers are yes, the map can be posted and the packet id can be written on the note. If an answer is no, the feature stays as it is. Sending it back is a normal result. It is not a failed day.

People sometimes say “the as-built was updated” and mean the whole job is done. Those are different. The as-built can be in the packet while the map still shows the old pipe. Both statements can be true at the same time. The as-built is the source. The map changes only after someone posts it.
